Trusts & Estates Editorial Guidelines & Process

Dear T&E Authors and Potential Authors:

Trusts & Estates—the journal of wealth management for estate -planning professionals since 1904—is always looking for new writers with interesting story ideas.

Please submit yours ideas for articles by e-mail. Include:
1) A few paragraphs describing the article you would like to write;
2) A few paragraphs of biographical information showing author’s qualifications to write the article. Please be careful to state whether you are in any way selling ideas your article promotes.

Send your e-mail to Rorie Sherman, editor in chief, Trusts & Estates magazine, rorie.sherman@penton.com.

Your article suggestion and biographical material will be forwarded to the appropriate T&E advisory board members for review. They and the editors will decide whether the topic is appropriate for publication in the magazine.

AuthorsT&E is written primarily by professionals, who serve the very wealthy, in short by our readers and their colleagues. The average readers of T&E have 20years experience; their clients have $10 million and much more. Articles must therefore be timely, sophisticated, scholarly and cutting edge. NOTE TO FREELANCE JOURNALISTS: T&Ealso welcomes story suggestions from professional journalists versed in legal affairs or business. Please send clips, resume and story idea directly to rsherman@primediabusiness.com

Contracts—All authors must sign writer’s agreements prior to publication.

Deadlines—Are set by the editors. Rule of thumb: Article ideas must be submitted about four months prior to issue date. Drafts are due about two months prior to issue date.

EDITING PROCESS — Note: This is all done by email in Microsoft Word

  1. Idea Presented— article suggestion & author bio submitted to T&Eeditor in chief rsherman@primediabusiness.com
  2. Advisory Board Idea Review— article suggestion forwarded by editor to appropriate advisory board members
  3. If approved, a T&Eeditor will contact you and set a deadline for first draft.
  4. Advisory Board Draft Review— appropriate advisory board members review first draft. Author may be asked to answer some questions/ makes some changes. Once approved…
  5. Line Editing — A T&E editor will line edit the article for style, structure and general readability. See attached “Trusts & Estates Style Sheet & suggestions for article structure.”
  6. First Writer Review— Author will receive edited piece and approve/correct editorial changes; return piece by email to T&E editor. Once this line-editing stage is completed…
  7. CopyeditingT&E articles go through two rounds of copyediting.
  8. Final Writer Review — The writer will receive a last-minute fax to check final product.

Important Note: Articles slated for one issue may be held over due to space and other considerations. There is no guarantee that a particular article will appear in a particular issue.

Editorial Calendar — Available online at trustsandestates.com Specific features and committee reports are designated for each issue. That means the editors are looking for articles specifically on those topics for those months. But any good topic will be considered for any month.

Index of Articles—An incomplete index is available online at trustsandestates.com It is being updated.

Length—For Features: approximately 2,500 words

Peer ReviewT&E is primarily a peer-review journal. Advisory board members approve the article topic and drafts. They may make editorial suggestions. For a list of T&E advisory board members, visit trustsandestates.com

Pictures—All authors must submit a headshot photo for inclusion in the contributor’s page.
