Littman Krooks Launches Website Serving Special Needs Community

Littman Krooks LLP has launched a website devoted to the concerns of individuals with special needs-autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and a wide array of other disabilities-- www.specialneedsnewyork.com.

"We're committed to helping individuals with special needs lead lives characterized by dignity, self-direction, and social engagement, in accordance with their wishes and capabilities," explains managing partner Bernard A. Krooks.  "This website is intended to be a resource as they seek personal fulfillment and economic security."

"Our goal is to provide individuals with special needs and their families with the tools to successfully advocate for themselves," adds special needs attorney and partner Adrienne J. Arkontaky. "This new website will be one of the many ways that we communicate with the large community that's committed to increasing opportunities for those with special needs."

Obtaining appropriate educational services is critical in order for persons with special needs to live within the community and have a career. But the special education system-which varies across New York State-can be both confusing and daunting. The website introduces families to the special education process and explains the key role played by parent advocates.

The website stresses the importance of financial planning that takes into account the requirements of government programs for which someone with special needs may be eligible. For minors and adults who cannot live independently, it focuses on the issue of guardianship and the need to craft detailed instructions-a letter of intent-for the individuals who will care for them in the absence of parents.

Other features include a blog addressing a wide range of issues affecting families with special needs; links to other helpful websites; and a calendar of community events.

Littman Krooks LLP offers legal services in several areas of law, including special needs planning, special education advocacy, elder law, estate planning and corporate and securities. Our offices are located at 655 Third Avenue, New York, New York; 399 Knollwood Road, White Plains, New York; and 300 Westage Business Center Drive, Fishkill, New York.
